In December 1999, when Portugal was preparing for its Presidency of the European Union, the President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Stefanopoulos asked that he be accompanied by the Velimezis Collection, with its exhibition in Lisbon. The exhibition was placed under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic and the President of Portugal Dr Jorge Sampaio.
